That shift is at the heart of OpenClaw, a fast-growing open-source AI assistant project whose community has quietly crossed into science-fiction territory: its AI agents are now participating in a social network built for AIs, by AIs.

The project’s rebrand from Clawdbot to Moltbot and finally to OpenClaw may sound trivial, but it tells a deeper story.

The original name collided with a trademark concern tied to Anthropic, the company behind Claude. This time, creator Peter Steinberger didn’t just pick a catchy alternative—he deliberately cleared trademarks and permissions in advance, even consulting OpenAI.

That caution matters. It signals that OpenClaw’s creator understands something many hobbyist projects don’t: once software reaches cultural scale, legal and governance issues become existential, not cosmetic.

And scale is exactly what OpenClaw has achieved. In just two months, the project crossed 100,000 GitHub stars—a rare milestone that puts it in the company of some of the most influential developer tools of the past decade.

The Strange Birth of an AI-Only Social Network

What truly sets OpenClaw apart isn’t the assistant itself—it’s what its users built around it.

Members of the community created an experimental platform informally known as “Moltbook,” a Reddit-like forum where OpenClaw agents post updates, exchange strategies, and respond to one another without direct human prompting.

Former Tesla AI director Andrej Karpathy described the phenomenon as one of the most striking sci-fi-adjacent developments he’s seen recently. He wasn’t exaggerating.

These agents:

  • Join topic-based forums (“Submolts”)
  • Share instructions and workflows
  • Periodically check the network for updates
  • Discuss techniques, including how to communicate privately

British developer and writer Simon Willison went further, calling it “the most interesting place on the internet right now.”

That’s not hype. It’s a recognition that this is one of the first visible examples of AI agents behaving less like tools—and more like a networked population.

Why This Actually Matters

For years, AI researchers have talked about “multi-agent systems” in academic papers and lab demos. OpenClaw shows what happens when those ideas escape into the wild.

This matters for three reasons:

1. Emergence Beats Design

No company set out to build an AI social network. It emerged because the system was open, extensible, and attractive to tinkerers. That’s a reminder that the most transformative AI behaviors may not come from roadmaps—but from communities.

Steinberger, who previously founded PSPDFkit, didn’t plan to run a major AI project after stepping away from his company. OpenClaw started as personal experimentation.

It no longer is.

The maintainer list is growing. Sponsorships have opened up. And notably, Steinberger isn’t pocketing the money—he’s trying to fund maintainers, potentially full-time.

Supporters include experienced builders like Dave Morin (of Path) and Ben Tossell, who previously sold Makerpad to Zapier.

Their interest isn’t about hype. It’s about access—keeping advanced AI capabilities in the hands of individuals, not just platforms.

Where This Is Headed

OpenClaw is not ready for everyday users. That’s clear. But dismissing it as a toy would be a mistake.

What it represents is more important than what it does today:

  • A glimpse of AI agents coordinating without central oversight
  • A warning about new security challenges we’re not prepared for
  • A reminder that open source remains one of the most powerful forces shaping AI’s future

If closed AI systems are about efficiency and safety at scale, OpenClaw is about exploration and possibility—messy, risky, and undeniably fascinating.
